Throw Back Thursday to 1995 and a giant inflatable hand sporting the “New” Seiko watch. All airbrushed by hand including the watch face. Way before giant digital printers came on the scene. Giant custom balloons or inflatables are a great way to get your product seen and noticed. They break through the clutter making your message front and center in people minds, and they’re fun!

Marketing products well takes a lot of creativity. The average American sees over 5,000 advertising messages daily. To make an impact when marketing products, your advertising, event planning & marketing strategies have to incorporate eye-catching techniques that leave an impression that lasts long enough to get consumers into your store to buy.

Not sure if they are allowed in your city? The zoning of inflatable outdoor advertising falls to each individual city. Policies for using inflatables usually fall under the city’s sign ordinance. Oftentimes policies are ambiguous, referring to inflatables as “ambient” balloons or devices, which could apply to either helium or cold-air inflatables.

So how do you find out? Cities now have the ordinances for signs online and with a little research you can chase down the requirements stating what times of year and how long they can be up. You can also call the zoning office or city hall if you can’t easily find them online. Either way giant inflatables are a fantastic way to get your product the “Attention Getting” it needs.

I’m often asked if a sign can really make a difference in sales for a store. The short answer, YES! Next I’m often asked about price, can I get it cheaper? Of course! But the truth is a lot more complex. The Sign Research Foundation has done a lot of tests and found some incredible truths that every business owner should understand. ROI is directly related to the quality, enjoyability to view, legibility, uniqueness, and informational aspects of a sign. The mistake most designers and customers make is looking at sign or building ROI in isolation of the entire customer experience. Revenue per square foot of space is 10 to 25% more for those business’ who deliver an integrated experience from sign to design throughout the store. So what does it all mean? Going cheap on signs may be less in the short term but its costing you money over the life of your business.

LED Lighting Vs. Neon

Neon Sign vs. LED Sign – What’s the difference?

One of the best ways to attract attention to your business is having a brightly colored and well-lit sign outside to draw people in. We as a species are visual by nature and if you can catch our eye you are more likely to garner our business. While neon signs have traditionally been the frontrunner when it comes to business advertising, the LED market is becoming more popular.

Neon

The most obvious differences between LED and neon lighting is that neon lighting comes in a hand crafted glass tube. The light is created from reactions with an inert gas that emit a fluorescent color due to the release of energy. Neon tubes are beautifully crafted but they are very fragile and there is a risk of damage to the tube if handled incorrectly.

LED

LED lights and signs are created using light emitting diodes (LEDs) which are strung closely together so that the light they emit overlaps and creates a steady source of light. LED signs are usually lighter and more protected than neon lights as LEDs are often wrapped in their own polymer jacket to protect each diode from external damage. Also, the lifespan of LED’s is much longer than neon, 10 times longer.

Energy efficiency

If you are looking for the most energy efficient lighting or signage option then LED uses much less power than a neon light. Neon bulbs need 15,000 volts to run while LEDs need just 24 volts. If you are thinking about a large outdoor display and contemplating LED or neon then this means a huge saving in running costs if you were to opt for an LED display.

Summary

There used to be a big difference in illumination ability between the two but over the last several years the advancements made to LED brightness has made that negligible. For that reason we recommend LED’s for your sign illumination. Easier to install, less power to run, not as brittle and fragile.

TBT, Bird of Paradise Mural

In 2002 we were commissioned to paint a mural for the CDC El Cajon. We were asked to depict something for the rebirth of downtown El Cajon. The inspiration came to us as the Bird of Paradise, out of the ashes rebirth! It was a fun project that gave us a chance to show off our fine art side and do some airbrushing “in plein air”.

We make a ton of signs, banners, wraps, but this was an opportunity to do something that brought beauty into our world. It was painted in an alley way that people walked when going from a parking lot to the theater. I always imagined it would be a great surprise, turning a corner and being greeted by a colorful mural.
